Kahuzi Biega National Park
After an early morning breakfast, you will cross the border at Ruzizi into the Democratic Republic of Congo and make your way to the Tshivanga Kahuzi-Biega National Park headquarters. Kahuzi-Biega is a World Heritage site. The park has diverse and abundant fauna in a tropical forest setting and is dominated by two spectacular extinct volcanoes, Kahuzi and Biega.
Some of the last groups of Eastern lowland gorillas, consisting of roughly 7,000 individuals, live here between 2100 and 2400m above sea-level. They have black coats, and the males develop silver backs as they mature. With the help of a ranger and trackers, we will approach this rare primate. The walk can take several hours but coming across these animals in their natural habitat is an incredible experience.
